A Poem for Presence: When was the last time?

When was the last time you felt? When was the last time you really felt something?

When was the last time you listened to a song? When was the last time you really listened to a song? When did you last lay on the floor, open your mind, and let sounds vibrate to your bones?

When was the last time you cried? Have you cried for the deep heartaches and ecstatic joys that are the beauty of life?

When was the last time you felt fortune? Have you stopped wanting for more long enough to give gratitude for the enough that you have? Have you humbly appreciated the fortune of being alive?

When was the last time you looked at a tree? When was the last time you really looked at a tree? When was the last time you looked at a tree for being a tree and not for being what you think the tree to be?

When was the last time you felt your own skin? Have you run your finger gently along your palm and felt the tingle that ripples on the surface?

When was the last time you looked at the tiny creases on your knuckles or the wrinkles of your elbows? When was the last time you looked at your body in awe in relief of judgement?

When was the last time you learned from a child? Have you allowed a child to teach you something you’ve forgotten? Have you allowed a child to teach you something you never knew?

When was the last time you let go? When was the last time you really let go? Have you let go of your beliefs long enough to let in something truly new? Have you let go of tomorrow long enough to be here today?
