Unity, Perserverance, and Devotion

Please note: This is a graphic scene of a woman being force fed and may be difficult to watch.

This clip, from Iron Jawed Angels, is a deeply moving show of unity, perseverance, and devotion. Alice Paul has been in solitary confinement and brought into the cafeteria with other imprisoned suffragists. They immediately stand beside her in a hunger strike and sing "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" as Alice is pulled away and brutally force fed.

Later, the press gets hold of the news and publicizes it. Because of the public outcry about the abuse of suffragists in prison, President Wilson reverses his stance and the 19th Amendment is passed.

A thank you doesn't do justice to these acts of courage. A humble thank you, ladies. More than inspiring.

Will The Circle Be Unbroken Lyrics:

I was standing by my window On a cold and cloudy day When I saw that hearse come rolling For to carry my mother away

Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky

For I told that undertaker Undertaker please drive slow For that body you are hauling Lord, I hate to see her go

Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky

I will follow close behind her Tried to hold up and be brave But I could not hide my sorrow When they laid her in the grave

Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky
